SIP trunking vs PRI: cost, reliability, and migration compared.
If you are paying for PRI circuits, you are paying legacy prices for legacy failure modes. Here is exactly what changes when you switch, including the parts that take work.
What each one is
A Primary Rate Interface is a physical circuit delivering 23 voice channels over dedicated copper or fiber. Reliable in the way a landline is reliable, and limited in the same way.
The savings range, explained.
PRI pricing carries the circuit, the hardware maintenance, and per-minute long distance. SIP replaces all three: no dedicated circuit to rent, no PRI card to maintain, flat-rate calling with no per-minute overages for standard usage. Across our migrations, organizations moving off PRI typically cut 30 to 40 percent from their monthly voice spend.
The failover difference.
When a PRI circuit is cut, your phones are down until a truck arrives. When a SIP path fails, calls reroute in seconds to a backup path, another site, or mobile phones.
The honest caveat: SIP depends on your internet connection, so we assess bandwidth first and architect secondary paths where continuity is critical. A SIP deployment is only as good as its engineering, which is why ours starts with a network assessment.
Capacity and scale
PRI scales in blocks of 23 channels, so you buy a whole new circuit for the 24th call. SIP scales one channel at a time, the day you ask. Seasonal businesses, schools, and campaigns stop paying for empty capacity.
What migration actually involves
Your existing phones usually work with SIP, so hardware replacement is the exception, not the rule. One client put it this way: our SIP conversion from legacy PRI finished on schedule and on budget.
Switch without downtime
The reason organizations stay on aging phone systems is fear of the cutover. Here is how we remove it.
Network Assessment
We map your current lines, numbers, and call flows.
Migration Plan
You get a written plan with dates, owners, and a rollback path.
Parallel Testing
The new system runs alongside your old one until it proves itself.
Go Live
Numbers port on schedule. Your callers notice nothing.
24/7 Support
US-based engineers monitor and answer from day one.
When PRI still makes sense
Almost never for new deployments, but the list is short and real: sites with no reliable internet path, and contracts with early termination costs that outweigh year-one savings. We will tell you if you are in either group.

Yes. Numbers port to the SIP trunks on a scheduled date, and callers never notice.
